Welcome! Here are 3 Great Reasons to (Not) Read This Blog

Jumping for joy in Wadi Rum, Jordan

Welcome to the first post on The Britt Blog! I’m glad you’re here. Pull up a chair, because I’m going to give you three reasons why The Britt Blog will likely be different from any other blog you’ve read.

1. I’m not an established blogger

This means I have nothing to lose if this whole thing goes sideways, and thus no reason to “fake it.” The Britt Blog is my first real blog and took me over a year to launch. I spent 6 months just wordsmithing this first post. No really, I did.

I first considered blogging as a hobby to have outside of work (more on that in my About page). However, The Britt Blog now represents my personal ambition to put out more of the kind of content I want to see. Which leads to my next point…

2. This isn’t a “typical” lifestyle blog

Most blogs aim for a specific niche. This one…doesn’t. At the end of the day, I’m a nerd who’s really into data and social justice and who happens to be interested in other things as well. And I want to share what I think about those things with you, in the hopes that you are also interested and want to have conversations about them.

You can expect weekly posts on lifestyle-y topics like exploring new places and how working remotely full-time has impacted my style (spoiler: there’s been lots of athleisure). However, I’ll also post about things like managing anxiety, dealing with burn out, and using fitness to help me recover from an eating disorder. There will definitely be some rants about norms I want to rebel against (I’m looking at you, patriarchy and diet culture). And watch out for some Nerd posts on issues related to knowledge management or the importance of inclusive data. Really, prepare for anything.

3. Things will get messy from time to time

I actually did wake up like this.

I’m not into sugarcoating. Life is too short to pretend that everything is perfect, and honestly it takes too much energy.

You’ll get a front row seat as I continue learning about my mental health and eating disorder recovery. Any “top 10” tips I have come from experiencing life and making mistakes, not from being an expert. But I hope that by sharing my experiences with a bit of humor, I can help you feel a little less alone with whatever you may be struggling with.

To loosely quote Vanilla Ice: “If there’s a problem, yo, we’ll solve it.”

So there you have it. I don’t expect you to always understand this blog – even I don’t get what comes out of my brain half the time. I also don’t expect you to agree with me all the time. At the end of the day, I want The Britt Blog to be your weekly dose of whatever you need it to be, even if that’s just knowing someone else out there has the same crazy thoughts you do.
